Writing Workshop: Come a Little Bit Closer/ Scene Building Techniques
Fiction and creative nonfiction can fall flat when readers feel detached from important events unfolding on the page. To connect a reader to a personal experience or the experience of a fictional character, a writer has to do more than simply narrate it. They have to pull readers in close, anchor them in time and place, and zip them into the character's skin (even if the character is the writer themselves), to paraphrase memoirist Mary Karr. Incorporating vivid, well-crafted scenes can do just that.
In this workshop, participants will look at examples of how authors use scene to help readers see, hear, and feel the action of a particular narrative moment. Attendees will engage in writing prompts and exercises that help them flesh out important moments in their own stories by drawing on scene-building techniques such as detail, description, character development, action, dialogue, thought, and reflection.
We will spend time examining craft topics central to memoir and essay, including sensory details and descriptive language; vivid, cinematic scenes; realistic dialogue; narrative tension; and authentic voice.
This day will include a half hour lunch (bring your own, or we have Buckley's Cafe nearby). Coffee, Tea, Seltzer and water provided.
