Sáng tác về cuối đời của Franz Schubert vắng số ở tuổi 31, năm 1828, THIÊN-NGA CHI CA được xem là hợp (nhưng không hẳn) tuyển các ca khúc ôm gọn hỉ nộ ái ố, phiên chuyển từ bổng xuống trầm, tựa như bao thù hình của cuộc đời. Vốn dĩ đã là đỉnh cao tột bậc của thi ca phổ nhạc, chùm ca khác nay khoác thêm bộ cánh hoàn toàn mới, lần đầu xuất hiện bởi Claus Guth, vị đạo diễn opera hàng đầu và không bao giờ biết đầu hàng.
Cùng với đạo diễn bối cảnh danh tiếng Michael Levine, Claus Guth cũng như phong vị đương đại của mình đã hô biến Thao trường Wave Thompson (New York) thành THIÊN-NGA CHI CA của Schubert. Qua màn thể hiện của giọng tenor lừng tiếng thế giới Jonas Kaufmann và cộng sự lâu năm Helmut Deutsch, chùm ca khúc u hoài, bi thiết càng trở nên kịch tính, bạo liệt đến từ chủ đích đảo chuyển ca khúc, cho tới khung cảnh giàu gợi tả, kỹ nghệ âm thanh và ánh sáng, tất cả tạo nên một bản dựng lai ghép giữa trình diễn và sắp đặt. Đặt tên theo ca khúc sau cùng “Der Doppelgänger”, là lúc người lính rốt cuộc cũng đã chấp nhận với “thực tại” không bao giờ quay trở lại với cuộc sống ngoài kia, bối cảnh kho vũ khí của Trung đoàn số 7 (Quân đội Hoa Kỳ) dường như muốn đặt ra nan đề thế nào mới là đáng sống, cũng như cái chết tựa như hành trình sau cuối, chứ chẳng phải đột ngột chấm dứt, như thể vận vào lịch sử kho vũ khí và sự gắn bó với binh nghiệp.
Đồng hành với những bậc thầy opera lẫn dàn dựng sân khấu, chính bối cảnh và hiện thực của Armory khiến cho chùm ca khúc kinh điển trở nên đương thời quá đỗi. Khán giả vốn quen thuộc với các tác phẩm cổ điển giữa các khán phòng truyền thống sẽ hết sức ngạc nhiên khi được chứng kiến và lấy làm kinh ngạc trước sự ấm cúng, gần gũi kịch phẩm DOPPELGÄNGER lọt thỏm giữa thao trường rộng hơn 5000 mét vuông, theo Rebecca Robertson, người điều hành Park Avenue Armory.
Guth và Kaufmann đều chọn một cách tiếp cận giàu thể nghiệm tổng phổ của Schubert, như đảo thứ tự và chèn thêm các sáng tác khác của Schubert, song hành với bộ khung âm thanh diễn live lẫn hình chiếu ghi hình từ trước nhằm kích gợi liền mạch vốn chỉ thể hiện qua libretto. Các trình chiếu động bởi hãng sản xuất rocafilm và thiết kế ánh sáng, bởi Urs Schönebaum, nhuận thêm kết cấu lẫn bề dày của ánh sáng sân khấu.

Composed in 1828 by Franz Schubert during his final days before death at age 31, SCHWANENGESANG (Swan Song) is a heart-breaking collection of songs that traverses a myriad of emotions, from despair and delusion to ecstasy and love, to form a series of masterful snapshots of all that life can offer. Sitting at the pinnacle of a vocalist’s repertory, these emotive works are given a thrilling new life in the world premiere of a theatrical staging by one of opera’s most adventurous directors, Claus Guth.
Contemporary opera director Claus Guth and celebrated set designer Michael Levine transform Wade Thompson Drill Hall for a spectacular reimagining of Schubert’s SCHWANENGESANG. Performed by world-renowned tenor Jonas Kaufmann with his long-time collaborator pianist Helmut Deutsch, the heart-melting collection of songs is amplified by additional Schubert repertory, an evocative soundscape, and transformative light and video projections to create a production that is part performance and part installation art. Named for the last song “Der Doppelgänger”, in which a soldier sees themselves and comes to terms with the reality that they did not return from war, this Armory commission beautifully explores the hunger for life and its beauty and the idea that death is not a sudden moment but a final journey; fittingly as the Armory has its own military tie and history.
In partnership with these operatic and stage visionaries, the Armory is originating a production that makes a classic song cycle distinctly contemporary. Audiences used to seeing classical pieces performed in traditional proscenium venues will be surprised and delighted to witness DOPPELGÄNGER, which makes the 55,000-square-foot Drill Hall feel like an intimate experience,” said Rebecca Robertson, the Executive Producer of Park Avenue Armory.
Guth and Kaufmann have taken an experimental approach to Schubert’s original score, deconstructing the song cycle and interspersing additional Schubert compositions as well as Nitschke’s soundscape of live and recorded elements that evoke the naturalistic imagery portrayed in the libretto. Projections by rocafilm and lighting by designer Urs Schönebaum lend additional dimension and texture to these sonic elements.

The footage used for this screening has been granted licence by production company and rights holder Bernhard Fleischer Moving Images GmbH, marketed, distributed and brokered by C Major Entertainment GmbH to From Alpha to Opera project, in partnership with Saigon Classical Music Group.
The translation and localisation of materials (including programme notes, printed handouts and subtitles) into Vietnamese are performed by volunteers with the sole purpose of promoting classical music and increasing awareness of high standard quality worldwide operatic performances. We endeavour to credit appropriate creators of these materials and organisations involved. The screening is non-commercial and non-profit.
