The Writers’ Room Experience with David Punch

This class will be conducted in Harbor Media's Conference Room on  Mondays and Thursdays - July 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24, 28, 31; 6-8 PM

In The Writers’ Room Experience class, you’ll spend eight 2-hour classes (one per week, with a bit of homework in between) collaborating with a roomful of fellow Writers to craft the second episode of an original half-hour comedy series – exactly the way it happens in the world of showbiz!

This immersive class wastes no time. You’ll dive right into the meat of the process, pitching stories, piling on ideas, bouncing off one another, and rowing as a group to craft the funniest possible episode.

It matters not whether you’re an experienced writer or you’ve never written a word before. Just bring a positive attitude, a willingness to participate out loud, and the ability to hear a well-intentioned “I get it, but no.” 

In exchange, you’ll learn about making stories specifically for half-hour comedy,  the best way to punch-up jokes, the crucial skill of teamwork, and how best to match your personality to that of a professional writers’ room.

And while this isn’t a writing class per se, we’ll inevitably get into discussions of what makes a compelling character, how to reveal that character through choices, the difference between story and plot, how to use language economically, how to give and receive notes, and a whole lot more!

In short, the WWE is a faithful reproduction of the fast-paced, energetic and fun-when-it’s-done-right world of a real writers’ room.
