Q & A:
1. Can I just watch without purchasing a ticket?
No, everyone inside the calf enclosure must have a ticket for this event.
2. What happens if it rains?
This event is rain or shine. The enclosure is covered, so feeding sessions will still take place.
3. Can I bring my own bottle to feed the calves?
No, we provide specially formulated milk bottles for the calves’ nutrition and health.
4. Do the calves enjoy being around people?
Yes—they’re naturally curious and social.
5. Where do the calves come from?
The calves in this experience are male Holsteins that we purchased from a local dairy farm. In the dairy industry, male calves don’t have a role in milk production and are sold at a very young age to be raised for meat. We choose to purchase some of these calves to give them a long life here on our farm—where they’re cared for with love, bottle-fed daily, and become part of an educational experience to help people connect with where their food comes from. Eventually they will grow old enough to no longer be bottle fed and eat grain and grass out in the pasture.
6. Why are the calves being bottle fed instead of nursing from their mothers?
Holstein calves are raised differently on a dairy farm than Angus calves on our farm. Our Angus calves nurse from their mothers in a more traditional cow-calf setting. Holstein calves, however, are typically separated early in dairy operations, and bottle feeding is a standard, humane practice that ensures they receive the nutrition and care they need. Because these cows' mothers were separated from their mothers at a dairy farm, they must be bottle fed until they are old enough to eat grain and grass. At our farm, we simply invite guests to help us during an already-scheduled feeding. The calves are not overfed, and the experience is carefully monitored by our trained staff to ensure their comfort and wellbeing.
