MICHAEL FRIEDMAN FEATURED AT MAY 13 POETRY HICKORY
Poetry Hickory, a 17-year-old monthly reading series hosted by Lenoir Rhyne professor, Scott Owens, and Taste Full Beans Coffeehouse in downtown Hickory, will feature Chapel Hill poet, Michael Friedman at its May 13th event.
Friedman will read from his recent collection, "Atmosphere," published by Main Street Rag.
Former NC Poet Laureate, Cathy Smith-Bowers, says of "Atmosphere," "These poems are empirical evidence that Michael Friedman is, indeed, a poet surprised by everything he touches. A poet who generously and brilliantly shares that surprise with his lucky readers. I found myself in a continuous state of awe as I moved from the first line of each poem to the final line. Anyone who can weave into a collection lines from artists as disparate as William Butler Yeats and Buck Owens has my heart—to do with what he will!"
Fellow poet, Richard Allen Taylor, comments, "Friedman’s debut collection blends the deliciously strange with the strangely delicious, stirring together technical knowledge and poetic craft to create poems of family, sickness, death, and loss. A fascinating read."
Friedman states that the poems "explore the interplay and sense making of family connections, personal loss, spirituality, and science, particularly quantum mechanics."
Friedman received his MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte. His poems have appeared in Tule Review, Kakalak, Wherewithal, Gyroscope Review, and others.
Friedman's reading will begin at 6:15 and be followed by an Open Mic. To register for the Open Mic, contact Scott Owens at 828-234-4266 or
