Visit Battlesteads Observatory, an official Dark Sky Discovery Site, and enjoy a beginner's guide to dark sky stargazing under the twinkling stars of Northumberland on the edge of one of the largest area of protected dark skies in Europe – the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park.
Using our powerful 14” telescope, Dobsonians and binoculars, we'll show you spectacular nebulae, star clusters, galaxies, planets, and any visible comets, weather permitting.
We'll also guide you with practical advice on finding dark skies and planning your own stargazing nights. Finally, we'll introduce you to helpful astronomy apps, some simple stargazing top tips, and the fascinating science of the universe. Our events are designed to put you in control of your journey, on the night and beyond.
The observatory's warm room offers a cozy and relaxed introduction to the dark, starry skies of Northumberland, with free hot drinks. It's the best, most comfortable way to begin your stargazing journey.
The evening will be adapted to feature any unexpected Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) displays. Your visit also includes the chance to handle our extensive museum quality meteorite collection, featuring pieces of asteroids, the Moon, and Mars.
Observing the skies is weather dependent, but all events go ahead regardless, with hands-on, fun and interesting activities.
