As part of One Community One Book, we are encouraging our local community to read A Case of Mice and Murder by Sally Smith. On Wednesday 18th June, we’ll be joined by Sally to discuss her time as a barrister in the inner temple, her inspiration behind the book, and what she’s been working on…
What is One Community One Book?
As Kett’s Books is a community bookshop, every year we pick a book for the whole town to read together. We choose a book which we all love, and actually would be confident recommending to any of our readers, however experienced or new they are to reading. If you only read one book this year, why not read the same book as your friends, neighbours, and local community?
Why should I read this book?
A Case of Mice and Murder is a legal thriller with a reclusive barrister working with a rough-round-the-edges young police officer, to solve both a murder and an international scandal around a children’s book. Set in 1901 in the Inner Temple in London, the book gives us a glimpse into law, culture, women’s rights, and even publishing, in a setting holding onto centuries of tradition, just on the other side of the gritty realities for those trying to make a living on Fleet Street.
Author Sally Smith worked in the Inner Temple as a barrister and later King’s Counsel, so she has an inside view on how the traditions which still affect us all play out in this most impressive and exclusive setting – with a compassionate eye for the classes that make the privileged life possible.
