🇺🇸 Honoring a Legend: Coach Gary Bowen 🇺🇸
On Friday, August 29th, before our first home football game vs. Duluth Denfeld (kickoff at 7:00 PM), the Hermantown Community Schools, in partnership with the Hermantown Football Program, Centricity Credit Union, and True North Flag and Flagpoles will proudly dedicate a new 50-foot flagpole at the football field in honor of a true Hermantown icon — Coach Gary Bowen.
Coach Bowen was more than a coach. He was the patriarch of Hermantown Football — leading the program as head coach from 1972 to 1990, guiding the Hawks to over 100 wins, numerous conference titles, and a State Runner-Up finish in 1981. He served as Activities Director from 1983 to 2006, and taught Health and Driver’s Education in the district for decades. His influence shaped generations of students, athletes, and coaches — and his impact is still felt on and off the field.
A proud American and deeply patriotic man, Coach Bowen always dreamed of obtaining the large American flag that once hung in the big gym of the old high school — a flag that symbolized pride, tradition, and unity. While that exact flag is long gone, we are honored to get as close as we can to fulfilling his vision — with a bold, beautiful flag waving high above the football field he helped build.
Even more special — Coach Bowen plans to be in attendance for the dedication ceremony! The football program would love to see as many Hermantown Football alumni as possible in attendance to honor him and say hello. Let’s pack the stands and show him just how much he means to this program and this community.
This new pole replaces the aging one currently at the field, and will serve as a lasting tribute to the legacy of a man who gave so much to our school and our town.
