Workshop: Physical Comedy
Dates: June 20th - 22nd
Friday: 15:00 - 20:00
Saturday & Sunday: 10:00 - 15:00
Join us for an immersive three-day workshop led by Jonathan Paul Cook and Tine Damborg. This workshop celebrates our eternal need to laugh at ourselves and explores the transformative power of physical comedy.
Who Should Attend:
This workshop is open to anyone interested in physical comedy, whether you come from the theater, circus, improv, stand-up, comedy, dance, teaching, or simply have a keen passion for comedy and stages.
Methods:
As one might expect, physical comedy must be studied through practical body work and improvisations. However, we will also reference various popular theories of comedy and laughter. Notably, we will introduce the "two-system" approach employed by cognitive psychologists:
• System 1: Fast, emotional, instinctive, and subconscious.
• System 2: Slower, deliberate, logical, and conscious.
While the logical aspects of System 2 are essential for learning text and understanding circumstances, it is crucial to invite the instinctive qualities of System 1 to keep acting alive and authentic. By learning to exploit their impulses and trust their bodies’ intelligence, actors can open up a broader world of imagination and comedic possibilities.
Objectives:
By the end of the workshop, participants will have become familiar with the following overlapping principles:
• Isolations
• Counter time
• Articulating cause and effect
• Takes and double-takes
• Throwing, sharing, and taking focus
• Effective entrances and exits
• Transformation of character and style
• Listening to both your partner and the audience
• Creating and resolving audience anticipation
• Playing the "Ah-Ha" moment
• Taking “the fall”
• Complicity with a partner and the audience
• Maintaining the playfulness of the child within a professional context
• Understanding and exploiting "super-text" – the attitudes and needs actors bring onto the stage as a dynamic source of style
• Embracing chaos
