Masefield-Themed Poetry Open Mic Competition
The Poetry House, Ledbury
Saturday 6th September | 7.30–9.00 pm (doors open 7.00)
You are warmly invited to a lively, sea-sprayed celebration of verse in honour of Ledbury’s famous son, John Masefield — second-longest-serving Poet Laureate after Tennyson and patron saint of salt and spray.
Poets are invited to read a favourite Salt Sea Ballad — Sea-Fever, Cargoes, Mother Carey, etc. — and then reply with a poem of their own. Think pastiche, parody, homage, or cheeky sabotage.
Not keen to rewrite? No problem. You can simply perform a Masefield original with sonorous flair and compete for the finest rendition.
We’ll have judges, prizes, and a bottle of rum for the winner and a copy of the Salt Sea Ballads for the runner up — plus free drinks in the interval and lashings of salty admiration.
All welcome, whether you want to perform or just sit back & cheer.
Tickets £5, includes a free drink.
