Porthleven Harbour, built as a harbor of refuge, is celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2025. The harbor's construction, which was undertaken in part by French prisoners of war, was completed in 1825 and officially opened to traffic in 1826. Construction took 14 years.
There are events being held in Porthleven to mark the anniversary. A three-day event featuring live music from local Cornish acts is scheduled for August 15-17, 2025. The Porthleven Museum also has plans to highlight the anniversary, though details are still being finalized. In addition, Porthleven's annual Lifeboat Day, which in 2024 celebrated the 200th anniversary of the RNLI, is another key community event that takes place in the town.
The harbour's history is deeply intertwined with the town's development. Originally a small fishing cove, the construction of the harbor transformed Porthleven, enabling it to become a significant port for importing coal, timber, and other goods, as well as exporting local produce like china clay and granite. The harbor was a vital refuge for ships sailing along the notoriously dangerous Cornish coast
