About the event

Modern Arab Art in Poland? Discovering Unexpected Paintings at the National Museum in Warsaw
We have a great pleasure to invite you for another lecture in our Research Centre in Cairo, this time led by a special guest, Dr. Magdalena Pinker (Faculty of Oriental Studies, UW; Chief Curator of the Department of Oriental Art at the National Museum in Warsaw). Dr. Pinker will deliver a lecture titled "Modern Arab Art in Poland? Discovering Unexpected Paintings at the National
Museum in Warsaw".

Although modern and contemporary Arab painting is gaining global recognition, such works remain rare in Polish collections. Among Poland’s seven national museums, only the National Museum in Warsaw holds examples of twentieth-century Arab painting. This small and fragmented collection, often seen as a curiosity within predominantly European – especially Polish – art holdings, nonetheless contains significant works with notable provenance. A close analysis of the five paintings sheds light on their acquisition, the artists’ life stories, and their unexpected ties to Poland. It also highlights the artistic, symbolic, and cultural value of the works. The collection includes exceptional pieces by leading figures of Arab modern art, most notably Inji Efflatoun and Tahia Halim, while also revealing how political landscapes in both Poland and Arab states shaped museum collections.
