Think of an addict in your life. It's okay - we all know one. They could be a friend, a classmate, coworker, stranger, or even as close as your parents or siblings. The closer they are to you, the more direct the impact that their decisions have on you. And still, regardless, the love you have for them doesn't go away.
As a child who was raised by multiple addicts and have had to deal with the direct impact of their choices, I know firsthand the struggles that addicts go through on a regular basis. I've seen some family members go to rehab once, get clean and never go back to their old ways. I've seen others go four, five, six times, and still not get completely sober. I've seen some people walk away and leave forever, overcome with embarrassment. I've seen friends die. Every single one of those people deserves the same support, love, and understanding.
On top of helping those with addiction, the Release Recovery Foundation helps those with mental illnesses and aids them in improving their lives and working towards a brighter future. As someone who grew up with a slew of mental illnesses (Massive Depression diagnosis at 13, Generalized Anxiety Disorder diagnosis at 18, Separation Anxiety Disorder diagnosis at 25, Postpartum Anxiety AND Depression diagnoses at 30), I empathize with everyone fighting to live another day. That's why I'm running with the Release Recovery Foundation.
There were so many days when I thought the world would be better off without me. If I had listened to the demons in my head when I was younger, I would not be here today: a 32 year old, married mother of two wonderful kids, working her dream job and running the freaking New York City Marathon. It truly gets better, and the Release Recovery Foundation helps people see that.
With the $6,000 I am pledging to raise, the Release Recovery Foundation will provide one person with the ability to get the treatment that they need to get out from the mountain of addiction and mental illness struggles. Who knows - that one person could be someone close to you.

The Release Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to ensuring all who are ready and willing to seek professional treatment, are able. Substance Use Disorder and mental illness destroy the lives of too many people from underserved communities who may not have the resources for proven treatments. The Release Foundation offers scholarships to bridge the gap between what people can afford and what they need to transform their lives, regardless of race, gender, and/or sexual orientation.
