Screening as part of our Summer Music Meltdown 2025, this film is back by popular demand and launches our Summer Music Meltdown. Over the summer we will be bringing you classic music films ranging from soul, punk, reggae, jazz and Americana - this year including choices from legendary DJ Wendy May.
"Summer of Soul is quite possibly the best music documentary film ever made! Filmed over the Summer of '69 in NYC, it is a wonderful film celebrating Black Music, culture and fashion. Unreleased, the tapes sat in a basement for more than 50 years until being restored and finally released in 2021.
The film features some of my favourite Soul Music artists from the emotional Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson and Mavis Staples, to the exciting and wild performances by Stevie Wonder, The 5th Dimension, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and Sly & The Family Stone.
It is a beautiful, colourful joyous film, which will make you want to dance in the aisles! And at this screening you can - dancing welcome!" - says Wendy.
