A Response and a Call

Join us on Monday, August 25 at 7:00 p.m. for the YouTube premiere of a special edition of JDPP’s Response and A Call: Motherland Musings, presented by JDPP with the support of Trinity College’s Theater and Dance Department, International Studies Program, Women and Gender Resource Action Center (WGRAC), and the Austin Arts Center.

In this recorded conversation, series host and curator Mellissa Craig shares reflections from her recent trip to the Republic of Benin in West Africa. The discussion explores the universality of music and dance as tools for communication across borders, languages, and generations. Through personal stories and vivid visuals, Mellissa delves into the power of returning to one’s cultural roots and how intentional acts of responsibility and remorse in the present can help heal the wounds of slavery’s past.
This event premieres on the first day of Be Kind to Humankind Week, a national celebration of kindness, reflection, and connection. We invite you to begin the week by engaging with this powerful conversation—one that honors empathy, cross-cultural understanding, and our shared responsibility to build a more compassionate world.
