ABOUT THIS EVENT
These sessions give a chance to listen in on the mysterious and normally inaudible underwater soundscapes hidden along the Grand Union Canal.
Using underwater microphones (hydrophones) and field recorders, we will engage with the unique canal landscape and its aquatic ecosystems.
By listening to and reflecting upon these soundscapes we are able to gain insight into the importance of underwater sound as well as the wider fields of bioacoustics and sound studies.
The sessions will be open to anyone with a curiosity to listen, no technical experience needed, and serve as an opportunity to celebrate how a shared sonic attentiveness to a place can help deepen our understanding of and appreciation for often maligned urban habitats.
This event involves a walk of about one and a half miles along the canal.
The sessions will be led by sound artist Tom Fisher who works under the name Action Pyramid. Tom's projects vary from site-specific sound installations for galleries and museums, to experimental sound works, documentary film, radio and music.
He has performed and exhibited his work internationally, attending artist residencies in Iceland and the Finish Arctic as well as being the recipient of the 2021 Phonurgia Nova Prize in the Field Recording category.
