We begin with No One is an Island – an award winning animated short by Knaresborough-based filmmakers David Bunting and James McKay. Through an animated conversation, scientists explore if everyone can live well without harming the environment and reveal how hope and creativity can inspire change. Based on research led by Professor Julia Steinberger at the University of Leeds.
We’ll then show a screening of 2040, a hopeful feature-length documentary by Australian director Damon Gameau, that travels the world in search of real-life climate solutions. Mixing expert interviews, powerful visuals, stunning illustrations and storytelling, 2040 offers a vision of the world we could create – for ourselves and future generations.
The science that informs the short documentary, No One is an Island, grew from much of the science that 2040 explores; David even calls it “our film's big sister, which reminds us of what living a good life means, and the power of love, courage, and creativity to spark positive change.”; making this an excellent double film screening, which will then conclude with a panel discussion and Q&A with David and James, offering a rare chance to engage directly with the creative minds behind the work!
This event is not just a fun night at the movies – it’s about inspiring action, sparking ideas, and supporting local climate solutions. Together, these films spark imagination, provide a roadmap for radical change and celebrate the power of community action.
