Please join Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table for its October 2025 dinner-program at 6:30 pm, Wednesday, October 8, at Camp Hill United Methodist Church, 645 Washington Street, Harpers Ferry, WV. Our program will feature historian and author Hunter Lesser speaking on “Robert E. Lee's Feuding Generals.”
Hunter Lesser's talk will feature two former Virginia governors; old political rivals who upended Confederate efforts to reclaim the western counties of that state in 1861. Generals Henry Wise and John Floyd squabble like schoolboys—even as Union forces march to annihilate them! Robert E. Lee is no match for their antics, leading to the loss of West Virginia and a scandal that stretches to the capitol in Richmond.
Hunter Lesser is an award-winning author, archaeologist, interpreter and preservationist based in Elkins, West Virginia. A director or adviser on numerous boards, non-profits and films, he was appointed to the West Virginia Archives and History Commission, the West Virginia Sesquicentennial Commission, and is a founding member of the Rich Mountain Battlefield Foundation. His books include Rebels at the Gate (a History Book Club main selection) and he is a coauthor of The Cambridge History of the American Civil War (Cambridge University Press).
The program is open to the public, but you must reserve your dinner by Sunday, October 5, by contacting Paige Troiano at
