Shiori Itō and Susan Brison have courageously spoken about their own experiences of rape and its aftermath, one in the form of reportage and an academy award-nominated documentary, the other in numerous scholarly articles and a philosophical monograph that has been translated into multiple languages. In this conversation, they will reflect on bearing witness to sexual violence, dealing with the criminal (in)justice system and societal (mis)understandings, and talking about what changes they hope to see for a better future.
Shiori Itō is an Oscar and BAFTA nominated documentary filmmaker, journalist, writer, and co-founder of Hanashi Films, focusing on gender-based human rights issues. Named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2020, her voice continues to resonate globally through film, writing, and public speaking.
Susan J. Brison is Professor of Philosophy at Dartmouth. Through her book, Aftermath: Violence and the Remaking of a Self, and her scholarly articles and lectures, she has brought greater philosophical attention to the topics of rape, domestic violence, hate speech, and image-based abuse. She has raised public awareness of gender-based violence through international talks and articles in the The New York Times, The Guardian, Time, and other newspapers and magazines.
Public event as part of visit organized by Asian Studies Culture and Language (ASCL) at Dartmouth.
