Denim & Kimono Mending Workshop – Transform Your Jeans with Sashiko & Boro

In this workshop, you’ll discover how to use the traditional Japanese techniques of sashiko and boro to repair and upgrade your denim, turning worn-out jeans into a unique work of art. This class is perfect for anyone who loves visible mending, slow fashion, or simply wants to give their favourite denim a second life.

• The basics of sashiko stitching and boro patchwork
• How to prepare and patch denim for strength and style
• How to add unique stitches or patches to make your denim truly one of a kind
• Tips for combining traditional motifs with your own creative design

During the class, you’ll work on your own denim piece and aim to patch 1–3 areas, depending on your speed and stitching style. You’ll also have the chance to explore freestyle stitching for decoration as well as reinforcement.

• A pair of jeans or denim jacket with worn areas, holes, or simply a spot where you’d like to add decorative stitching
• You’ll be provided with my beautiful collection of kimono scrap fabrics to use as patches, enhancing your piece with authentic Japanese textiles
• All other materials are included (needle, thread, extra fabric swatches, and guidance)

This workshop is taught by Risa Sato, a Japanese upcycle artist and the founder of Obi, Kyoto, a London-based creative studio specializing in upcycling and sustainable fashion. Risa is passionate about reusing materials and transforming old textiles into artful, functional pieces, inspiring others to embrace slow fashion and mindful making.
