Strangewaves is heavily honoured to present the Ontario-debut of ANGEL BAT DAWID, the visionary celestial jazz artist who has released instant classic Afrofuturist records such as The Oracle, Live and Requiem for Jazz in the past half decade. Angel will be joined by SophiYahE. (Detroit) and 9MAGICFOREVER1 to present MOTHABOARD & 9th Gate Sonic Research Society (N.G.S.R.S):
This performance presents a layered, experimental exploration of Hamilton’s legacy as a key site of the Underground Railroad. Through live sound, ritual elements, and immersive sonic design, the show invites audiences into a metaphysical investigation of liberation, memory, and spiritual purification centered on the elemental power of salt.
Featuring live improvisation by multi-instrumentalists 9MAGICFOREVER1, SophiYahE, and Angel Bat Dawid, the piece integrates sampling, electronics, DJ techniques, and sound bowls—crafting a dynamic sonic landscape that bridges historical consciousness with contemporary avant-garde practice. The performance emphasizes sound as a tool for reflection, grounding, and spiritual alchemy, fostering an environment for collective remembrance and transformation.
This is a sensory and conceptual journey—an exploration of salt’s role as a mineral of purification, protection, and grounding—culminating in meditative sound bowls and ritualistic beats. The experience aims to create a space for introspection, historical reflection, and sonic transcendence.
Support from the night will come from local audio-visual artist and educator, Charlie Star, whose stunning work was recently showcased during a residency at Sackville, NB's Strut gallery, and thi Fall will take Charlie to Venice, Italy, during a fellowship at the Canada Pavilion during the International Architecture Exhibition at the Biennale di Venezia Canada Pavilion.
"Through my artistic practice, I explore personal and collective identity, shaped by my experience growing up in a biracial French-Canadian and Afro-Caribbean family. Right now, I’m especially interested in uncovering overlooked stories in Black diasporic history and learning more about the diverse connections across the diaspora. I particularly explore this through the lens of Black musical history and how it shapes identity and a sense of belonging.
I work with found and archival materials, combining them in new ways through both digital tools and analog collage to make new sounds and visual artworks." - Charlie Star
