What if one piece of land could feed you in many ways, not just one?
This Food Forest Workshop is for anyone ready to create land that is beautiful, abundant, and alive—harvesting fruit, vegetables, medicine, fibre, firewood, and more from a single, thriving system.
Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned gardener, this Food Forest Workshop is for you! Learn how to create truly beautiful and abundant spaces, rather than single-use gardens.
Whether your land is a small urban backyard, lifestyle block, or farm, the principles shared here can be applied anywhere.
Held in March, one of the best times for planting and establishing systems, this workshop is designed so you can learn the principles and put them into action straight away.
Using ecological principles and permaculture techniques, you’ll learn how to transform grass or a tired orchard into a thriving food forest.
During the workshop, we will:
-Learn the foundations of food forest design
-Explore a more established food forest
-Plant an existing area using food forest methods
-Learn about support species, their roles, and how we use them on site
You’ll also go home with:
-Propagation material of support species we use here
-Clear understanding of which support species to use, why, and where
-The confidence to start planting and building your own food forest straight away
This workshop is for anyone ready to work with the land to create systems that are productive, resilient, and alive.

About Hakea
Hakea is a land based community, permaculture farm and learning space in Aotearoa, focused on caring for the land, building soil, planting natives, and strengthening community values.
Over the years, Hakea has become a living demonstration site, with food forests, gardens, and evolving ecosystems that show what’s possible when permaculture principles are applied in real landscapes. It is a place of learning, experimentation, and connection—where people can observe, participate, and learn directly from the land.
Hosting this Food Forest Workshop at Hakea offers participants the chance to see systems at different stages, learn from an established site, and take part in hands-on planting within a working landscape.
