About the event

Digital Conservation: Promises and Pitfalls, Practices and Perspectives
Please join Nature Guelph on January 8, 2026 at 7:30 pm for a presentation by Eric Nost. Technology is rapidly transforming conservation—from bird-identification apps to artificial intelligence monitoring illegal fishing. Eric delves into the possibilities and challenges of “digital conservation”: Can these tools truly democratize and scale up conservation? What are the biases and environmental costs of digital technology? Does reliance on tech distance us from direct experience and local knowledge? This presentation explores these pressing questions, offering a clear-eyed assessment of the opportunities and risks in digital conservation.

Eric Nost is an Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Guelph and a member of the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative. His research focuses on the role of data and technology in environmental policy and governance.
