Join us at the consulate for a screening of the acclaimed documentary The Search for Major McMurrey (2008). This poignant film explores the rediscovery of Major William C. McMurrey, an American officer who served and died in China during World War II. It highlights the efforts to honor his legacy and reconnect his story with his surviving family members.

Following the screening, we are privileged to host a discussion with producer Kangyan Deng, who will share insights into the making of the documentary and answer audience questions.

About the speaker:

Born in Xi’an, Kangyan Deng moved to Shenzhen in 1992. He has held various prominent roles, including Planning Director of Shenzhen Youth, Editor-in-Chief of Phoenix Weekly, Chairman of Yuezhong Film and Television, and Artist-in-Residence at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen). Currently, he serves as a documentary and exhibition producer at Shenzhen National Records Film and Television Co., Ltd.

Mr. Deng has published several works, including Faraway Is Not Far, Often Moved, New Observations on Old Photos, New Readings of Old Textbooks, and Lyrics Monologue. He has produced numerous documentaries, such as The Search for Major McMurrey, Finding the Major, Shenzhen Folk Memories, Sixty Years, Three Places, The Masters, Socialites, Prometheus, The People, Stories from Old Textbooks, Huangpu, and Wild Shenzhen. His "Cultural and Martial Republic" documentary and exhibition series has reached audiences across mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, sparking renewed interest in the culture of the Republic of China era. Notable exhibitions, including The Masters Return, Huangpu Military Academy, and Old Textbooks, have toured cities such as Shenzhen, Beijing, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Taipei, Chengdu, Xi’an, Sanya, Kunming, and Shanghai.

邓康延简历生长于西安，1992年南下深圳，曾任《深圳青年》策划总监、《凤凰周刊》主编、越众影视董事长、港中大（深圳）驻校艺术家，现为深圳国民纪录影视公司纪录片、展览制作人。

出版著作《远方不远》《常常感动》《老照片新观察》《老课本新阅读》《歌词独白》等；制作纪录片《寻找少校》《发现少校》《深圳民间记忆》《六十年 三地歌》《先生》《名媛》《盗火者》《民间》《老课本讲故事》《黄埔》《野性深圳》等。“文武民国”纪录片暨展览系列辐射两岸三地，其中《先生回来》《黄埔军校》《老课本》巡展于在深圳、北京、南京、杭州、广州、台北、成都、西安、三亚、昆明、上海等地，促动民国文化热潮。
