Tony Trischka is considered the consummate banjo artist and perhaps the most influential banjo player in the roots music world. For more than 50 years, his stylings have inspired a whole generation of bluegrass and acoustic musicians with the many voices he has brought to the instrument. Referred to by NPR as “the great banjo liberationist,” Trischka raised the banjo’s profile in many ways. Through his theme song for Books on the Air and performances on A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, From Our Front Porch, and other programs, he’s been a frequent presence on NPR. His work with his pal Steve Martin has helped the banjo gain a wider audience and deeper understanding. In many ways, Trischka’s collaborators — among them Bruce Molsky, Béla Fleck, Billy Strings, Stuart Duncan, Ronnie McCoury, Darol Anger, Molly Tuttle, Brittany Haas, Dominick Leslie, and others — join him to pay homage to an architect of progressive bluegrass—an invaluable pioneer who absorbed the slings and arrows of roots traditionalists and proved that acoustic music could accommodate imagination and individualism. His latest album, Earl Jam: A Tribute to Earl Scruggs, was nominated for a 2025 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album and features some of the biggest names in bluegrass.
