About Peer-to-Peer
PFLAG Grinnell/Poweshiek provides much-needed support to LGBTQ+ people and their families. People come to PFLAG in different stages of acceptance of themselves & their loved ones. Peer-to-peer meetings provide a judgment-free, confidential & safe space to share and get support on their journey.
Some people come to share stories from their lives, feel supported and even get or give advice. Others are looking to learn about issues and get information about the local LGBTQ community. Many are looking for new friends, social connections, or just someone that can relate to their experience.
Who can attend?
All are welcome; whether you are:
* LGBTQ+ person who may need support with self-acceptance, coming out, transitioning, or need advice on issues related to family, friends, and community relationships, etc.
*A parent or family member on a journey of supporting an LGBTQ+ loved one or suspects that someone you love is LGBTQ+ and aren’t sure how to approach the subject, or if you should;
*A friend, ally, or community supporter looking to provide support to the LGBTQ+ individuals & families.
What to expect?
While each meeting has a facilitator*, peer-to-peer are 'peer-led' which means the subject matter and discussion is generally determined by the attendees. However, there are several things you can always expect at a peer-to-peer meeting:
1. Review the Ground Rules / Confidentiality Statement
2. Introductions including name and pronouns
3. Informal circle format; each person shares what brought them to peer-to-peer or what they hope to get out of the meeting. You are only expected to share what you are comfortable sharing.
*Meeting facilitators are NOT trained counselors, psychologists, or mental health professionals.
Safe Space Guidelines & Confidentiality Statement: Confidentiality is a fundamental agreement for all who participate in PFLAG. Anything said in a meeting is confidential to the group. What you hear and who you see stays here.
Ground Rules
*Be honest.
*Use “I” statements.
*Express feelings, not opinions.
*Be respectful of time.
*Give your full attention.
*Respect differences and diversity of views.
