Best Practices: Application of LGBTQ+ Affirmative Therapy

Objectives:

1. Participants will develop an understanding of social constructs and challenges of the LGBTQ+ population in the Southeast through an overview of statistics, vocabulary definitions, and concepts to increase competence.

2. Participants will learn clinical skills and interventions that best support assessment, intervention identification, and goal development.

3. Participants will participate in clinically based scenarios for applying concepts, skills, and interventions.

Presenter Bio:
Cynthia Gordon (they/them) is Affirm SC’s Director of Training at the Queer Wellness Center and therapist and clinical supervisor at Amarylis Counseling. Cynthia received their undergraduate degree from Winthrop University in Psychology and Masters degree in Social Work at The University of South Carolina. They have worked within the child welfare system, child advocacy, hospital systems, court systems, non-profit spaces, and community engagement. At the core, their desire is to work in spaces that support and exceed the challenges of access to resources and empowering communities. Cynthia uses both professional and lived experiences to assist people in considering ways to support purposefully marginalized and under-resourced communities. Using humor and engaging dialog, the goal is to empower professionals to empower their communities.
