Songwriters@Scup #35, with Mare Comody, Jack Riggs, and Doug Baker

Songwriters@Scup is a monthly “songwriters in the round” event, sponsored by Mark Dillon and Doug Baker, and hosted by Scuppernong Books.

This month we’re bringing you three veteran songwriters to perform thier songs and talk about the stories behind them.

Mare Carmody is a voice of Southern storytelling, in both songs and prose. She believes life indeed is a song. Or a series of songs.

Raised in North Carolina, Jack Riggs began writing music in high school. His music took him to New York on summer tours as well as local gigs on college campuses and local bars. His music is influenced by the singer songwriters of the late 60’s and early 70’s. Jack’s music retains that early bluesy folk rock spirit while striking a contemporary tone

Doug Baker has been a part of Greensboro’s music scene for over 40 years. He released his first solo recording, Navigating Life, in late 2021. Eddie Huffman, author of “John Prine: In Spite of Himself,” noted that the album “ranges far and wide musically, from a Georgia Satellites-style rocker to a pretty piano ballad,” and highlighted its “quirky, lighthearted touch reminiscent of John Prine and Loudon Wainwright III.”
