About the event

Abigail Dowd & Jess Klein

Doodad Farm is proud to host two of North Carolina’s most accomplished songwriters for an evening of intimate music. Abigail Dowd has graced our stage many times over the years, while this will be Jess Klein’s first appearance here. Everyone is invited to join us for this show!

ABIGAIL DOWD:
Singer/songwriter/guitarist Abigail Dowd grew up under the longleaf pines in the Sandhills region of North Carolina. Known for her storytelling and command of an audience, she has been called "a writer of the highest caliber” (The All Scene Eye). Her soulful voice and unique classical guitar style caught the attention of Acoustic Guitar Magazine, which described the album “Not What I Seem”: “The guitar-driven introspective folk of the 1970s [as] a touchstone, but so are blues and roots rock ’n’ roll.”

Pulling from her heritage of storytelling and determination, Dowd weaves hints of Celtic melodies with the soulful gospel of the south to create a sound that dances between folk, rock and blues.

Dowd’s latest album “Beautiful Day” was released on April 23, 2021. Recorded live with a full band at the Fidelitorium, the album was produced by Grammy nominated engineer/mixer Jason Richmond.

JESS KLEIN:
Jess Klein came to this world to pull firebrand power and childlike joy from our darkest shadows. Her acoustic-driven, hook-laden story songs revel in the polychrome of human experience - joy, rage, sensuality and resilience. The New York Times calls her “A songwriter with a voice of unblinking tenacity.”

Jess has toured the globe performing in pin-drop listening rooms, cozy theaters and at raucous festivals in front of tens of thousands of fans. She has toured nationally and internationally supporting Arlo Guthrie, Josh Ritter, Damien Dempsey, John Fullbright and Jonathan Byrd and has opened for such legends as Ani DiFranco, Steve Earle and Alejandro Escovedo. Jess has appeared on Good Morning America and NPR’s All Things Considered and has performed at the Newport, Winnipeg, Falcon Ridge and Philadelphia Folk Festivals as well as Fuji Rock Festival in Japan.

Jess's live shows are known for their intimate and soulful atmosphere. Whether solo with just her guitar or backed by a band, Jess performs with a raw, emotional intensity. Her emotive vocals, and poignant storytelling invite her fans on a journey through themes of love, loss, and resilience.

HOW TO JOIN US:
You never need a ticket or a reservation to attend one of our concerts - just show up. If we had a gate, it would open at 7pm. Feel free to show up earlier than that, even, if you just want to enjoy the weather, have a picnic, or just hang out (though we may ask you to help set up!). The show will start at 8pm.

Doodad Farm never charges for entry to concerts, though we do request that those who are able (and you know who you are) donate at the stage area. Every penny of donations goes straight to the performers. We think $20 per person is a reasonable donation for this show. As always, we ask that you surprise yourself with your own generosity to support our performers.

OTHER DETAILS:
• Kids, dogs, and all your friends are always welcome. Doodad Farm is a SAFE PLACE for everyone.
• Please bring CASH for your donation to the performers and for merch purchases.
