This workshop is great for teachers and students that are interested in developing skills in creating sequences that move the body toward a particular goal.

Terry Brown presents this workshop with teachers and students that wish to challenge their practice and sequencing skills. These workshop classes are designed to help refine your practices, offer a combination of safe, mindful sequences that lead you to a goal pose, and offer tools to address particular issues.

The workshop schedule is:

July 16, Wednesday, 11:30am—2:00pm

Yoga Practice for Hip Mobility, Stability, and Strength

Yoga practices are effective in keeping the hip joints functioning at their best. Stiffness and weakness in the hips can lead to challenges in functional strength, stability and balance. We may not even recognize our imbalances in our hips at first as other muscles begin to compensate. Eventually, pain and fatigue begin to remind us that something isn’t quite right! This class will be a practice of yoga poses for flexibility and strengthening practices to help improve stability around the hip joint structures. (Mixed levels yoga students and up.)

July 16, Wednesday, 2:30pm — 5:00pm

Developing Skills in the Practice of Ardha Matsyendrasana I

Ardha Matsyendrasana I is a seated twist pose that is both strengthening and rejuvenating. The name for this asana is derived from the Sanskrit, ardha, meaning “half”; matsya, meaning “fish”; indra, meaning “king”; and asana, meaning “pose.” The entire torso twists in the pose, which improves circulation and improves spinal mobility. It also tones the abdominal organs, improves digestion, and is very effective for easing back pain. This asana is recommended for menstrual disorders and urinary tract infections as well. The psychological benefits of Ardha Matsyendrasana I include calming the mind, strengthening the nervous system and alleviating stress. (Mixed levels yoga students and up.)

July 17, Thursday, 11:30am—2:00pm

The Four Pillars of Human Movement Explored in the Practice of Yoga

Most human movements fall into one of four categories: locomotion, raising and lowering center of mass, pushing or pulling, and rotating. These categories are known as the four pillars of human movement. We can explore these the four pillars with yoga practices and discover how paying attention to them are essential in developing a healthy, fit, and functional life. (Mixed levels yoga students and up.)

July 17, Thursday, 2:30pm — 5:00pm

Yoga for Heart Health

Current research and study demonstrates that yoga practice can be a beneficial preventative method of maintaining heart health. Yoga postures may increase blood flow to the heart, and improve the musculoskeletal tone, which then can assist in the return of blood to the heart. Yoga also benefits the nervous system, helping to calm and balance the entire cardiovascular system. Yoga can also foster other healthy habits, like improved eating habits and sleep regimens. (This class is appropriate all levels.)

July 18, Friday, 10:30am – 1:00pm

The Thoracic Complex: Open and Unfold

The thoracic complex refers to the skeletal framework, fascia, muscles and neurovasculature that make up the chest wall. Comprised of the thoracic vertebrae, ribs, and sternum, the thoracic cage provides protection to vital organs such as the heart and lungs and plays a role in respiratory mechanics. Common challenges that we can address with yoga are forward flexion of the ribs that restrict breath, dropping of the sternum creating pressure on the heart, and hyperkyphosis of the thoracic spine resulting in shoulder and neck pain. Breathe better, move better, feel better with the practices from this class. (This class is appropriate all levels.)

July 18, Friday, 2:30pm – 5:00pm

Aligning, Strengthening, and Stabilizing Your Core

Yoga poses and yoga-inspired practices offer some of the most safe and effective methods of strengthening the core stabilizers and toning the midsection. This class will explore a variety of practices that target the deep core stabilizers, the abdominals, and the back muscles. The tools offered in this class will assist you in a challenging, yet safe practice. (Mixed levels yoga students and up.)

July 19, Saturday, 9:00am – 12:00pm

Mastering Backbends Simply and Skillfully

Backbending is structurally impeded in the thoracic spine and yet usually easy in the lumber spine. Because of this, we tend to often take the path of least resistance and put most of the backbending action in the low back spine. This can make it challenging to take the backbend practices into some of the more challenging poses. Taking the time to open the tight areas of resistance including the shoulders and the hips along using The Great Yoga Wall™ offers the opportunity to create a spacious and more evenly spread backbend that feels less compressed, leaves the mind feeling refreshed, and the body invigorated. (Mixed levels yoga students and up.)

July 19, Saturday, 1:30pm – 4:30pm

MeltMethod for the Whole Body: Refining Your Practice to Relieve Stuck Stress

The goal of myofascial release is to ease pressure in the fascia system so that the fascia becomes lubricated with hyaluronic acid, a substance that our bodies produce naturally. Hyaluronic acid allows fascia to glide smoothly over muscles and tendons. When the body has become void of this fluid, the tissue becomes dehydrated resulting in stress, injury, poor posture, and pain. The MeltMethod incorporates rehydrate techniques aim to “revitalize and rehydrate” connective tissue and relieve tension in our bodies using gentle compression and lengthening techniques. This class will use the Melt Soft Foam Roller and the Hand and Foot Therapy Balls. (This class is appropriate all levels.)

July 20, Sunday, 9:00am – 12:00pm

Improving Your Posture with Yoga to Improve Your Long Term Health

Taking steps to improve your posture will not just help you prevent back pain and joint stiffness. As you increase the health of the back by building holistic strength, increasing flexibility, and improving alignment, the health of your entire body will benefit. You will experience more energy, vitality, and greater well-being as vital energy flows more freely. Research has shown that therapeutic yoga exercises can be tremendously effective in improving posture and overall back health. Yoga for posture increases flexibility and strength and, in addition, offers relaxation and stress management. (This class is appropriate all levels.)

July 20, Sunday, 1:30pm – 4:30pm

The Vagus Nerve: Reset and Discover Your Inner Peace

The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body, running from the brain, passing and contacting the tongue, vocal cords, throat, heart, lungs, diaphragm, liver, spleen, large intestine, small intestine, pancreas, and kidneys and ending as a ball of nerve endings in the stomach. This nerve is called the “nerve of emotion”, because it is a main component of the parasympathetic nervous system. It oversees a vast array of crucial bodily functions, including mood, immune response, digestion, heart rate, and the relaxation response that is responsible for returning the body’s balance after a stressful event. Yoga, meditation, and pranayama can improve vagal tone, which helps to facilitate improved recover from stress and trauma. (This class is appropriate all levels.)
