About the event

Paul Newman Crime & Punishment Double Feature
Friday May 2nd the Greenfield Garden Cinema will offer a Paul Newman “Crime and Punishment” double feature. One ticket gets movie goers into both shows. At 6:30pm the theater will show the 1959 legal drama The Young Philadelphians followed by a 9:00pm showing of 1967’s prison classic Cool Hand Luke. “While we love first run films, we don’t want these classics and iconic stars like Paul Newman to be forgotten.” says Garden co-owner Angela Mass. “It is important for young cinephiles to know Paul Newman did more than make salad dressing.”

The Young Philadelphians stars Paul Newman fresh off his Academy Award nomination for Cat on A Hot Tin Roof alongside Barbara Rush and Robert Vaughn. Based on the 1956 novel by Richard P. Powell, the soap-opera-esq drama received Academy Award nominations for Vaugh as best supporting actor, cinematography and costume design. The movie is also on the American Film Institute’s top ten courtroom dramas list. Biographer Lawrence J. Quirk cites this as Newman’s mother’s favorite film because Newman’s role was very much like the actor in real life. The script which is credited to Ben L. Perry was actually written by blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo.

Cool Hand Luke stars Paul Newman and George Kennedy and is based on Guy Pearce’s 1965 novel. The film not only earned Newman an Academy Award nomination for best actor but secured an Oscar for Kennedy as best supporting actor. In 2005, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation on the National Film Registry considering it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The film has an amazing 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie also features Strother Martin who uttered one of the most recognized and repeated movie quotations, “What we have here is a failure to communicate.”

Tickets are $10.50 for adults, $8.50 for seniors, students and veterans.
