- A bit about the artists-
The riveting performances of sisters vocalist Rachel and violinist Sara Caswell are the culmination of their having made music together since childhood. Their seamless sound combined with their unique interpretation of repertoire ranging from the “Great American Songbook” to contemporary jazz is propelled by arresting improvisation and soulful storytelling. Their debut Caswell Sisters album Alive in the Singing Air (Turtle Ridge Records) featuring Fred Hersch was released in 2013 to rave reviews and was selected by jazz critic Thomas Cunniffe as one of the year’s “Best Vocal CDs” on Jazz History Online.
These talented siblings share much in common: both studied jazz from an early age with Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Distinguished Professor David Baker, both attended IU on full scholarship and graduated with High Distinction, both went on to earn masters degrees in Jazz Performance, and both were invited to participate in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s Summer Residency program in Aspen/Snowmass, CO. As educators, they’ve continued to share similar paths—Sara serves on the faculties of the Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, The New School, and New York University and Rachel at IU’s Jacobs School of Music.
As individuals, Rachel and Sara have each gained recognition for their unique sound and artistry. Grammy® nominated Sara has been voted into the DownBeat Magazine Critics and Readers Polls every year since 2013, has released three highly-acclaimed solo albums, the most recent of which is The Way to You (2023, Anzic Records), and recorded with such artists as the WDR Big Band, esperanza spalding, Brad Mehldau, Brian Blade, and Chris Potter. Rachel, a master of vocal improvisation and lyric interpretation, has also recorded three solo albums, the latest of which entitled We’re All in the Dance (2018, Turtle Ridge Records) features Dave Stryker, Fabian Almazan, Linda May Han Oh, Johnathan Blake Jr., and her sister.
