Computer Scams & How to Avoid Being a Victim: Protecting Yourself from Online Threats
In this session, community members will gain a thorough understanding of common online scams and cyber threats, as well as practical strategies for protecting themselves in the digital world. With the rise of cybercrime, learning to recognize suspicious activities and safeguarding personal information has become essential for everyone, regardless of tech experience.

Understanding Common Scams: Explore the most prevalent online scams, such as phishing emails, tech support scams, fake investment opportunities, and social engineering tactics. We’ll break down how these scams operate, who is typically targeted, and the red flags to look out for in emails, phone calls, websites, and text messages.
Recognizing Phishing Attempts: Learn how to identify phishing emails, messages, and fake websites that try to steal your personal information. We’ll cover the telltale signs of phishing, including unfamiliar links, fake sender addresses, and urgent requests for sensitive data.
Safeguarding Personal Information: Discover best practices for protecting your personal data, such as setting strong, unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and knowing when and where to share sensitive information. We’ll also discuss the importance of keeping software and devices up-to-date as a key defense against security breaches.
Avoiding Tech Support Scams: Learn to recognize and respond to fake tech support calls or pop-ups that attempt to gain remote access to your computer or request payment for unnecessary services. We’ll explore the typical signs of these scams and what to do if you encounter one.
