Training Overview:

We are offering free, insightful and informative Understanding Autism training to anyone who works with people experiencing problematic drug & alcohol use.

Why might autistic people develop addictions? (adapted from the National Autistic Society)

Autistic people may use substances to cope with social situations, challenging life problems and manage sensory differences which can cause increased stress and anxiety. Some autistic people might also use, or become reliant on, alcohol or drugs to mask their autistic characteristics.

Evidence suggests that Autistic people are more likely to report problematic alcohol and other substance use, when compared to the general population. To support Autistic individuals within our roles, we are offering Understanding Autism training, delivered by Norfolk Autism Partnership.

What does the training cover?Sessions are co-delivered alongside an autistic person, ensuring real-life perspectives are shared and heard throughout.

The training offers a comprehensive introduction to autism, covering:

  • What autism is and how it can present differently in individuals
  • Common strengths and challenges faced by autistic people
  • How to create more inclusive environments and effective communication strategies
  • The importance of understanding sensory differences and reducing barriers

Why attend?By taking part, you'll gain:

  • Increased awareness and understanding of autism
  • Practical tools to support and include autistic individuals in your setting or community
  • Personal insights from lived experience
