“Do-li-na” by DAVIDE DEGANO embraces the untold stories of Friuli and its cultural minorities, shedding light on their oral histories, mythologies, and traditions. Home to Slovenian, German, and Friulian linguistic minorities, Friuli and its people have endured the impact of fascist ideology, which sought to erase their cultural identities. Degano’s connection to these histories stems from his grandmother, whose cultural and linguistic identity—like that of many others—was shaped by the suppression of her community under the fascist regime. Through an exploration of the region’s past via photographic archives, testimonies, traditions, and music, Degano aims to demystify history, opening up new possibilities for oral traditions to become integral in the writing of Friuli’s collective memory.
Next to “Do-li-na,” the artist will also speak about his project “Romanzo Meticcio” and the artist book that evolved from it, published by @artphilein_books in in October 2024, and follow threads that run through both of his series.
“Do-li-na” is part of the Dujak project: an ethno-photographic study on border multiculturalism in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, organized by Associazione Constraint ETS/Spazio35 (Udine, Italy), and funded by Regione Friuli-Venezia Giulia, #iosonofvg, in partnership with the Comunità di Montagna Canal del Ferro e Val Canale - Museo Etnografico Palazzo Veneziano di Malborghetto (Italy), Camera Austria in Graz (Austria), and Kulturni Center Lojze Bratuž in Gorizia (Italy).
