Cast of Characters
BEN – Male, 30s–40s
Calm under pressure. Natural leader. Must convey strength and resilience while under siege.
Note: In the original 1968 film, Ben was portrayed by Duane Jones, making it one of the first
horror films to cast a Black actor as a non-stereotypical lead. We welcome actors of all
backgrounds but are especially interested in honoring that legacy through inclusive casting.
BARBARA – Female, 20s
Begins composed, then unravels into shock and grief. A psychologically demanding arc.
HARRY COOPER – Male, 40s–50s
Controlling and fearful. Stubbornly clashes with Ben. Full of tension and bravado.
HELEN COOPER – Female, 40s–50s
Wry, weary, emotionally distant. Protective of her daughter. Handles stress with sarcasm or
silence.
KAREN COOPER – Female, 10–13
A child in physical decline who ultimately transforms. Strong nonverbal physicality required.
TOM – Male, late teens–20s
Earnest and hopeful. Trying to keep peace and be helpful. Shares a romantic kiss with Judy.
JUDY – Female, late teens–20s
Cautious but brave. Shares a romantic kiss with Tom. Grows more assertive.
JOHNNY – Male, 20s
Barbara’s older brother. Sarcastic and dismissive. Appears early and returns as a zombie.
ZOMBIES (Ensemble) – All ages and genders
Seeking expressive movers to portray eerie, slow, silent (or groaning) undead. Minimal
dialogue; maximum physical presence. Makeup, moans, and mayhem included.
Radio Newscaster – Voice only. Grave, offstage narration.
News Anchor Onstage. Delivers grim television updates with clarity.
Dr. Grimes . Scientific expert. Calm, clinical delivery with unsettling implications.
Bill Bardough – Male. Urgent, on-the-ground field reporter. Energetic and intense.
Chief McClellan – Male. Gruff sheriff. Blunt, dry delivery. Think small-town authority
Deputies – 20s–50s. Armed law enforcement presence. Some will appear as zombies.
We foster a welcoming, low-pressure audition room. If you’re nervous — come anyway. We’re
looking for energy, not perfection. If a role doesn’t exactly match your age try out anyhow.
Those are guidelines for the character, not the actor
