Exploring Argentine Tango
This workshop invites you to explore the basics of Argentine tango and how to play with them in any kind of partnering, social couple dance or contact improvisation. Being present in your own body while listening to your partner and the music is the core, from there we will explore the dance together changing roles (leader, follower) and partners.
Argentine tango is a social couple dance that originated in the 1880s along the Río de la Plata. The dance developed in close relation to the tango music as orchestras normally played at the Milongas (tango social dance events). Argentine tango is specific in the sense that there are no decided patterns to follow, no basic "tours". The base is simply shifting weight and walking together with your partner and the music. From there plenty of possibilities open up and the dance can become very complex and technically challenging. The beauty of tango is the listening and strong connection that is created in the couple "just" by walking together in an embrace.
Gilda Stillbäck is a dancer, choreographer and actress based in Gothenburg. She is creating stage work and experimental dance/art films for all audiences, children, youth and adults. Physical intelligence, intuition and empathy is guiding her work whether it is as a choreographer, dancer or actress. Just after graduating from the Royal Swedish Ballet School in Stockholm Gilda discovered Argentine tango. She moved to Paris and later spent several months in Argentina diving into the beauty of tango. During several years she explored the meeting between contemporary dance and tango which later led to her first creation "b rör mig" (touch me) which premiered at NorrlandsOperan in 2007 and later toured in Sweden and Argentina. Gilda has been teaching and performing tango all around the world - France, Italy, England, Iceland, Lebanon, Norway, Finland, Slovenia and more. www.gildastillback.com
