(OPEN) CALLING for trans and non-binary* artists for the exhibition ULTRA in Gothenburg this autumn at Studio 69!
* or any other gender identity that isn't cis
WOULD YOU like to participate in a group show arranged BY and FOR trans and non-binary people?
This autumn Studio 69 will participate in GIBCA Extended. The theme of this year´s biennial focuses on solidarity and alliances—exploring how to create space for one another while avoiding the repetition of existing hierarchies. We want to be a part of that important moment, using our platform as a standing point for trans and non-binary artists.
Trans and non-binary spaces are rarely public—sometimes due to safety concerns where participants might face harm, and other times because such spaces simply don't exist or aren’t made available. We want to seize the opportunity to support and create space for one another and simply be together as a whole. Whilst strengthening the community and show representation in the contemporary art scene of Gothenburg.
We invite you to answer this open call under the theme ULTRA. The word ultra is a prefix—an affix placed before the stem of a word—and rarely stands on its own because it is in need of what comes after. Ultra means beyond, more than, or on the other side of, but it can also imply something extreme, radical or uncontained.
In this exhibition, you are invited to position yourself before, after, or even in the middle of the word. You can play with its opposite; moderate, normative and neutral. Or you can tell a story beyond the ultra, as long as your ideas engage with the concept of the word.
Through ULTRA, we want to create space for art that doesn’t quite fit or is considered outside the norm. Here, ultra can stand on the side of something —or simply exist on its own.
