🌕 Join Us for International Observe the Moon Night
📅 Saturday, 4 October | 🕔 17:00 – 20:00 | 📍 Edgemead Village Centre Lawn
Members of the public are warmly invited to join us for International Observe the Moon Night, a free, family-friendly evening dedicated to exploring and celebrating our closest celestial neighbour.
International Observe the Moon Night is a global event that inspires people around the world to observe, appreciate, and better understand the Moon and its connection to space science, exploration, and human culture. Each year, this event brings together scientists, educators, and lunar enthusiasts from across the globe.
🔭 What to Expect:
Telescopes will be set up on the lawn, with experienced amateur astronomers on hand to guide you on a fascinating lunar journey. Whether you’re a first-time stargazer or a seasoned observer, you’ll discover new details about the Moon’s surface and features.
✨ Did You Know?
Most people think the full Moon is best for viewing, but it's actually the worst time. When the Moon is full, its surface appears extremely bright and flat. The best views are during the First or Last Quarter phases, when the rugged lunar landscape is beautifully highlighted along the “terminator” — the line between sunlight and shadow.
🌍 The Moon is the fifth-largest natural satellite in the Solar System, with a diameter of 3,475 km. Although much smaller than Earth (which is about 80 times its volume), both are roughly the same age. A leading theory suggests that the Moon formed when a massive object collided with the young Earth, ejecting material that eventually coalesced into the Moon we see today.
🔸 Bring binoculars if you have them — they offer stunning views of craters and maria!
This event is part of the International Observe the Moon Night initiative, sponsored by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission and the Solar System Exploration Division at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre, with support from partners around the world.
Come share in the wonder of the night sky with us — no booking required, and all ages are welcome
