GARY BACKSTROM , the front man and founder of New England based jam band JIGGLE THE HANDLE ,and has played regionally as well as toured the country many times over the past 30 years
Gary has played at High Sierra Fest and head lined Berkshire Mountain Music Fest , Strange Creek and Worm Town Music Fest . He has shared the stage with local favorites such as Max Creek, Assembly of Dust , Strange Folk, and Ryn Montbleua as well as opening for THE ALMAN BROS, DERICK TRUCKS, LOS LOBOS, SPIN DOCTORS, THE SAMPLES , LITTLE FEAT, RAT DOG , WIDE SPREAD PANIC , and has Played with Liberty Devito From , drummer of Billy Joel's Band ,While tourIng with the symphonic rock group Piano Men , playing rock concerts with various 60 piece orchestras around the country
Recently Gary has put together a stellar 8 piece line up of amazing musicians to form THE GARY BACKSTROM BAND . The line up includes Chris Nemitz on keys , Everett Pendleton on bass , Peter Koeplin on drums , Yahuba Torres on percussion , Kit Holliday and Kevin Silvia on harmony vocals , and John Vanderpool on sax .
The new line up is touring the north east and finishing up a new Cd . Recently Gary and crew have put together a tribute to one of their biggest influences, Todd Rundgren , and have had the pleasure of being joined on stage by many of Todd’s band mates . A live show falls somewhere In the realm of the soul and RnB of Stevie Wonder blended with the fiery Latin rhythm and blazing guitar of Santana leaving audiences bedazzled and thrilled .
Way Up South has been tearing up the New England club and festival scene and rapidly gaining a reputation as an explosive live band with a deep well of compelling original music and stellar musicianship. Fresh vocal harmonies, instrumental virtuosity, and dynamic energy transference between the musicians and the audience are the hallmarks of Way Up South.Way Up South's expansive sound incorporates a maturity and musicianship that weaves in and out of southern, blues, country, jazz, and Americana rock—music whose precision and finesse still retain the loose spacey qualities that epitomize improvisational rock bands.
