In this 3 hour workshop you'll be inspired by the gargoyles and grotesques of Gloucester Cathedral, and have the opportunity to make one of your own, to take home.
Set in the medieval surrounding of our learning Hub, above St Marys Arch, you'll learn about the sculpting process undertaken by our stone masons, as part of designing a new gargoyle, before carving.
Referencing some of our masons sculptures, photos, and a mini tour of the gargoyles themselves, you'll then design sculpt a terrifying creation of your own.
You'll be using clay, and tools, under the supervision of our experienced tutor, Jane Brighton. No previous experience, or artistic flair needed!
Those above 7 years old are welcome, although this is not a workshop designed with children in mind. All under 18s must be accompanied by an adult, if an accompanying adult is not taking part, they do not need to purchase a ticket.
At the end of the session you'll be able to take your art home with you, or enter it as part of Gloucester Cathedrals summer exhibition - 'Crafts that Built the Cathedral'. From 10th July - 26th September Gloucester Cathedral will be showcasing heritage skills and art work produced by the community. By taking part in this workshop, you can choose to have your work featured in the exhibition, it will be returned to you, by post on the close of the exhibition in September.
This workshop takes place in our Learning & Participation Hub, the classroom space is up two flights of stairs. Unfortunately, due to the historic nature of the building we are unable to provide level access to the workshop space.
