Venue - DBS Glenfield - The Old Rectory, Main St, Glenfield, Leicester LE3 8DG

Live Training Event will be on - Monday 23 March 2026 at 9.30am till 13.00pm

This practical, interactive session introduces practitioners to the power of signs, symbols and visual communication to support young children’s language development, emotional regulation and independence.

Delegates will explore how early communication develops, learn key signs and symbol systems suitable for EYFS settings, and discover how to embed visual strategies into routines, play, and learning.

This session embraces the diversity of Leicestershire communities and supports practitioners to develop culturally responsive communication practices where every child — including multilingual learners, children with SEND, and those with emerging language — can be seen, heard and understood.

Course aims and objectives

By the end of the session, delegates will:

· Understand the importance of early communication development within the EYFS.

· Explore how signs and symbols can enhance understanding, reduce anxiety, and strengthen relationships.

· Learn practical strategies to embed visual communication into daily routines, transitions and play.

· Understand how signs and symbols support children with SEND, including those with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).

· Reflect on how cultural diversity influences communication styles, identity and belonging.

· Develop confidence modelling early signs and using symbol-based systems in their setting.

Learning outcomes

Delegates will be able to:

· Explain the benefits of signs and symbols for all children, not only those with identified needs.

· Demonstrate a range of early signs and visual communication tools.

· Create simple visual supports (choice boards, visual timetables, routine strips).

· Adapt communication strategies for multilingual children and families.

· Apply inclusive, anti-racist practice by ensuring visual resources reflect diverse families and identities.

· Implement at least one new visual communication strategy in their EYFS environment.
