About this Event

When disaster strikes – whether through war or natural events – rebuilding is about more than just infrastructure. It’s about restoring safety, wellbeing and a sense of belonging. This in-person event brings together two expert speakers to explore the vital intersection of health, culture and construction in the aftermath of crisis.

Sean McQueenie – A trainee architect with over 5 years industry experience

Rebuilding Community through Culture, Collaboration and Design

Sean McQueenie will share how restoring buildings and everyday places after disaster is key to rebuilding healthy, resilient communities. His talk will show how community-led design and preserving local culture are essential for physical safety and psychological recovery. This session will highlight how architecture and design can shape safe, meaningful environments long after the initial emergency has passed.

Professor Roger Willey - CEO, ACS Physical Risk

The Asbestos Legacy in Modern War Zones

Professor Willey will expose a hidden and ongoing danger in post-conflict zones: asbestos. Drawing on data from the aftermath of the 9/11 Twin Towers attack, he’ll explain how asbestos clouds caused by bombings in modern war zones can lead to long-term health risks for civilians and responders alike. His presentation is a crucial reminder that what lingers in the air can be as deadly as what falls from the sky.
