Our next in-store event is something a little different - a visit from local artist and good friend of the shop, Paul Maguire, who’ll be presenting his MIDI2Vector software and showing how it can be used to create spectacular laser displays to accompany electronic music.
MIDI2Vector is a custom prototype software application which responds to MIDI input and generates synchronised responsive animated sequences using oscilloscopes and lasers. Paul will be talking through the development history and technical background of the software and discussing the fundamentals of drawing using scanning beam technologies. The presentation will include some coding demos with a breakdown of the hardware chain involved, and will end with a short musical performance with a live laser projection.
Paul Maguire is an artist and electronic media designer based in Glasgow. He has been working in creative electronic media for over 30 years. He leads the BA(Hons) Interaction Design programme at The Glasgow School of Art. In collaboration with Edwin Pickstone, he created the text-to-MIDI software MonoType MIDI, which was named the runner-up in the Artistic/Visual Project or Installation category at the 2025 MIDI Innovation Awards.
Tickets are free; drinks and pizzas will be available from 6.30pm (including non-alcoholic and vegan options) and the event will start at 7pm. Hope to see you there!
