From September 2025 the monthly music performances at Sharmanka return to the first Thursdays of the month, where they began and where they were for many moons! September's event is a very special return too, with Theatre of Home - the ongoing collaborative project of Maria Sappho and Raymond MacDonald.
“The name comes from our recent co-edited book, New Directions in Musical Collaboration, and it reflects our shared practice, research and our lives exploring improvisation through technology, travel and collaboration. We’ve played together for many years as part of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra and our duo work moves fluidly between performance, installation, and experimental research. From large-scale, ensemble improvisations in Shetland to contributing to the development of an improvising orchestra in Zambia, and from gallery exhibitions to interactive AI installations across Southern Africa and Europe, our work explores the strange intimacies of sound - how it moves between bodies, systems, and environments and how improvisation might offer ways to rehearse new forms of relation, care and collective imagination.” - Raymond MacDonald.
We look forward to welcoming Maria and Raymond to the gallery to perform their unique blend of musical improvisation and experimentation amidst Eduard Bersudsky’s marvellous mechanical sculptures.
