In contemporary life, we are inseparably intertwined with technologies and digital information. This exhibition, ‘Interface: A Discrete Body’, offers the audience a space to contemplate how painting can both evoke the 'becoming' of individual subjectivity and reshape our understanding of subjectivity in an era dominated by technology and virtual information. By considering canvas as a metaphorical screen and digital interface, artist Sitian Zeng positions painting within the rapidly changing landscape of image culture. She explores the discourse on painting's role as a socially critical medium in the post-digital era. The depicted body is rendered in a discrete way, referring to the fragmentation of subjectivity under the influence of the unstable and inconsistent digital information — information that is constantly disseminated, reconstructed, and misinterpreted. Drawing on philosopher Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s concept of ‘body without organs’, Sitian embraces this condition as one of potential: it is a space where new configurations and meanings can emerge through fluidity and reassembly. Through a series of interactive rotating paintings, this exhibition invites the audience to immerse themselves in the illusion that the painting may create.
