850 Years of Glasgow’s Infrastructure

The River Clyde has been at the heart of Glasgow’s transformation from an ecclesiastic settlement, through it’s days as a trade hub and an industrial powerhouse, to today’s vibrant and cosmopolitan city. To celebrate Glasgow’s 850th birthday, this walk will discuss the key infrastructure and engineering accomplishments along the River Clyde related to Glasgow’s remarkable development.

This engineer led walk, by members of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Glasgow and West of Scotland Branch, will explain the engineering behind the infrastructure and how they represent the changing face of Glasgow from the fishing and ferries to ship building and trade, the railway mania of the 19th century, the growth of cars in the 20th century and to today’s need to reduce pollution and reliance on fossil fuels.

The walk will start from the Glasgow Science Centre, walking towards the city centre.
