George and Sue Lane Preserve
3378 Shearer Rd, Gladwin, United States
The 270-acre George and Sue Lane Preserve, located in Gladwin County on the beautiful North Branch Cedar River, is protected by the Little Forks Conservancy to protect water quality and native wildlife habitat. Join us on August 21st, from 9am-12:00pm, as we continue in this effort by managing invasive species to restore habitat and healthy ecosystems.
What we’ll be doing: Volunteers will help restore the native habitat of the George and Sue Lane Preserve by manually cutting down invasive species such as autumn olive and buckthorn. Invasive species are those that are non-native to local ecosystems and can be harmful to the environment. Conservancy staff will also be applying herbicide to invasive cut stumps to prevent future growth. Those under 15 must have a parent present or a chaperone. This event is recommended for ages 10 and up.
What to bring: Gloves, water, safety glasses, and loppers and/or handsaws. We will be working outside in shrubs, tall grasses and brush, so please dress accordingly for the event and weather. Closed toed shoes are required and long pants are recommended. The Little Forks Conservancy will also provide additional tools, safety glasses, and bug spray.
Location, Directions, and Time: The George and Sue Lane Preserve is located on Shearer Rd, Gladwin, MI 48624. Volunteers will meet at the preserve parking lot, located on Shearer Rd between Schmidt Rd. and M-18. An LFC staff member will be waiting at the parking lot to direct volunteers.
