In partnership with the Pumpkin Buttes Chapter of the Wyoming Archeological Society (WAS), the Rockpile Museum is proud to present The Battle of Bonepile Creek: The 1865 Sawyers Expedition on September 4, 2025.
“The bluffs around at sunrise were covered with Indians to the number of 500 to 600, and fighting was commenced by their charging down over the plain.” – Alexander Sawyers, 1865
Join the Rockpile Museum and the WAS-Pumpkin Buttes Chapter for an evening of excitement as the Rockpile Museum’s own Justin Horn presents on the history of the 1865 Sawyers Expedition. While passing 10 miles south of modern Gillette, Wyoming, Sawyers and his men encountered a group of Cheyenne Indians and got into several skirmishes with the Native Americas at Bonepile and Caballo Creeks.
Laurel Vicklund will also be joining us to talk about the archaeological excavations done at the rifle pits at the Caballo Creek Site in 1997. Laurel was the Senior Environmental Engineer assigned to the project by AMAX who owned the mine at the time. The Rockpile Museum holds many of the artifacts from this archeological excavation and we are pleased to give Justin and Laurel the opportunity to present on the archeological significance of these sites.
