Osimun Quartet — Haydn, Mendelssohn, Seara & Gotkovsky

Het lijkt een niet voor de hand liggende combinatie: componisten uit het classicisme en een saxofoonkwartet, maar het Osimun Quartet doet het met overtuiging. Om de brug naar de 21ste eeuw helemaal te verankeren voegen de vier Spaanse muzikanten er enkele hedendaagse werken aan toe. Zo vroegen ze de Spaanse componist Robert Seara om nieuw werk te schrijven en kiezen ze voor Ida Gotkovskys Quatuor pour saxophones. Wat al deze stukken met elkaar verbindt? Een universeel, diep menselijk thema: lijden, afzien, pijn. Christus’ lijden aan het kruis klinkt bij Haydn bijna plechtig, gestructureerd en naar het einde toe enigszins hoopvol. Helemaal anders verloopt het bij Gotkovsky, die de chaos laat overheersen en alle structuur overboord gooit. Het Osimun Quartet toont lijden in al zijn vormen en laat het nog mooi klinken ook.

It seems like an unlikely combination: composers from the classical period and a saxophone quartet, but the Osimun Quartet pulls it off with conviction. To fully anchor the bridge to the 21st century, the four Spanish musicians add several contemporary works. They asked Spanish composer Robert Seara to write a new piece and chose Ida Gotkovsky’s Quatuor pour saxophones. What connects all these pieces? A universal, deeply human theme: suffering, endurance, pain. Christ’s suffering on the cross sounds almost solemn, structured, and somewhat hopeful towards the end in Haydn’s work. Gotkovsky takes a completely different approach, allowing chaos to reign supreme and throwing all structure overboard. The Osimun Quartet shows suffering in all its forms and makes it sound beautiful too.
